Center for Independent Living (Spring 2008)

The Center for Independent Living at 2539 Telegraph Ave. in downtown Berkeley is situated between private, residential Regent St. and public, commercial Telegraph, at the end of Blake St.

In my project, a seamless circulation allows visitors to experience mobility as they go upwards through interconnected, ribbon-like spaces that weave the building together. The first floor serves mainly as a public, open gallery with a café. The gallery continues on the second floor, which now features athletes in CIL history, linking to the more private recreational gym and studios on the third and fourth floor respectively.
