Urban Folds: activity center (Spring 2009)
My conceptual premise is a series of folding floor plates that organize space and create circulation for the building. Programmatically, all the main activity centers are grouped together, with the largest volume on the bottom and more compartmentalized spaces on higher levels. To allow for more open, free-form spaces in the front, all the offices, locker-rooms, and classrooms create a dense core in the back. As for performance, there are radiant heating and cooling systems connected to the pool and energy-generating stairs and gym floor that harvest kinetic energy from human movement.
The site is located at the intersection of 9th and Mission St. in the SOMA district of San Francisco.
